Effective immediately, the use of metal detectors, digging, and excavation are prohibited at Crab Bank Seabird Sanctuary.

Beginning January 1, 2026, enforcement will also extend to the collection or damage of fossils, along with other activities prohibited under S.C. Code § 50-11-2200 and S.C. Code of Regulations Chapter 123-200 through 204. These laws safeguard public trust lands from activities that can damage natural features and disturb sensitive wildlife habitat.

These rules—already in place across South Carolina’s Heritage Preserve system—will be actively enforced to protect the island’s fragile habitat and ensure its continued role as a safe haven for coastal bird species.

Crab Bank, rebuilt in 2021 after being lost to Hurricane Irma, has quickly re-emerged as a critical nesting site for Black Skimmers, Gull-billed Terns, Least Terns, American Oystercatchers, and South Carolina’s state seabird, the Brown Pelican. Protecting the island from unauthorized collecting and digging ensures that its shoreline and habitats remain intact for the benefit of both wildlife and future generations.

Tucked into the mouth of Shem Creek, Crab Bank and it's neighboring islands are some of Charleston Harbor’s most enchanting natural landmarks.  Once lost to erosion, these wonderful islands have been carefully restored. For today, Crab Bank and other coastal barrier islands provide a vital nesting ground for pelicans, terns, herons, and rare coastal birds.

Departure point: 100 Church Street dock on Shem Creek, Mount Pleasant SC.

Note: These islands are very close to Shem Creek, so the boat ride itself is short (just a few minutes each way). Most of your 2-hour experience is spent on the sandbars exploring and searching for shark teeth.

  • No dogs allowed at any time.
  • Between March 15 through October 15 the area is closed to all access including the intertidal zone between low and high tide waterlines.
  • No person may enter any area of the preserve designated as a nesting area for birds
 
  • Between October 16 through March 14 access is allowed only in the intertidal zone between low and high tide waterlines.
  • No motorized vehicles, bicycles, or horses are allowed at any time.
  • No camping allowed at any time.

Q: What is Crab Bank Island, why is it special?
A: Crab Bank is a small sandbar island at the mouth of Shem Creek in Charleston Harbor. It’s a protected seabird sanctuary and an awesome spot to explore nearby sandbars, walk the tide line, and look for shark teeth and shells (while we respect posted wildlife rules).

Q: Do we actually land on the island?
A: We follow state wildlife signs and seasonal protections during our Charleston Crab Bank eco tours. Your captain will choose a permitted nearby sandbar/shoreline. So you can safely get out, beachcomb, and hunt for teeth without disturbing nesting birds.

Q: Where do trips depart?
A: Most trips leave from Shem Creek, Mount Pleasant. Your confirmation email has exact directions and parking tips. All the needed information is provided in advance.

Q: How long is the tour?
A: Typical trips run about 2 hours dock-to-dock (keep in mind that private charters can be longer). Crab Bank is very close to Shem Creek, so the boat ride itself is short (just a few minutes each way). Most of your time is spent on nearby sandbars walking the tide line, exploring, and searching for shark teeth.

Q: What’s the best time to find shark teeth?
A: Low tide is king. After a windy day or a big tide swing, fresh teeth often show up along the ripple lines and at the edges of shells and gravel.

Q: How many shark teeth will I find?
A: It varies by tide and luck. Some guests find a handful, some find dozens. We’ll show you exactly where and how to look so you have the best shot.

Q: Is this kid-friendly?
A: Sure thing! This is one of our favorite trips for families. The walking is on packed sand with shallow water nearby. Keep little ones next to an adult at all times.

Q: What should I wear and bring?
A: Water shoes or sandals that can get wet, a small bag or zip-top for finds, a hat/sunscreen, a towel, and water. Light layers are smart in spring/fall.

Q: Can I bring a stroller or a cooler?
A: Small soft coolers are fine. Strollers don’t roll well on sand. We recommend considering a baby carrier instead.

Q: What about bathrooms?
A: Some of our boats have a small marine restroom. If it’s important to your group, tell us when booking so we can assign the right vessel or advise.

Q: Are pets allowed?
A: SCDNR says that dogs are not permitted.

Q: Will I get seasick?
A: Unlikely. We stay in protected harbor waters and near sandbars. If you’re sensitive, a non-drowsy remedy before boarding helps.

Q: Is walking difficult?
A: We step off onto a sandbar with gentle slopes. Guests should be comfortable stepping from the boat into a few inches of water and walking on uneven sand.

Q: What if the weather looks bad?
A: Your captain monitors radar, wind, and tide. If conditions aren’t safe or fun, we’ll reschedule.

Q: Can we keep what we find?
A: You’re welcome to keep shark teeth and empty shells. Please leave live shells, sand dollars, and anything with a creature inside, and please never disturb birds or posted areas.

Q: Can I fly a drone?
A: Drones are not allowed near posted sanctuary areas and can disturb wildlife. If you’re an experienced pilot, ask your captain first – most days it’s a no.

Q: How many people can you take?
A: We run small-group and private charters. Capacity depends on the boat assigned to your trip; tell us your headcount, and we’ll match you to the right vessel.

Q: Is this accessible?
A: Boarding involves a step from the dock to the boat and from the boat to the sand. If someone in your party needs extra assistance, let us know—we’ll plan accordingly.

Q: Do you provide life jackets?
A: Yes. Coast Guard–approved PFDs are onboard for everyone; children 12 and under must wear them while underway.

Q: Do you offer private trips or special occasions?

A: This is a simple, short sandbar trip. We take a quick boat ride from Shem Creek to a nearby sandbar by Crab Bank, your captain gives a brief overview of the area, bird sanctuary rules, and tips on where/how to look for shark teeth, and then you have time to explore at your own pace. It’s not a long narrated harbor tour or a fully guided fossil hunt with the captain next to you the entire time.
